Chapter Twenty-Four

Patrick already stood on the front porch of his cabin when Laura pulled her car up. His face was scrunched up in a formidable frown, and his arms were crossed in front of his massive chest. The small white terrier dancing and yipping around his feet took some of the macho man out of his stance.

At least he’s not in his wolf form. God help her and Blair if Patrick had greeted them as a wolf. Not that she thought he’d attack them, but he’d have terrified Blair, which would’ve been her brother’s motivation for appearing to them in that form. So, all in all, his furious human form was a blessing. The only negative in it wasn’t his rage; it was his nakedness. Patrick confronted them in all his male glory. She should’ve expected that. She glanced at Blair to see his reaction.

His face was flushed deep red, and he’d averted his eyes, which focused their gaze anywhere but on her brother.

“Don’t let him see you’re fazed,” she said. “He’s deliberately trying to make you uncomfortable.”

“Well, mission accomplished,” Blair replied. “Maybe I should sleep in the car.”

“Absolutely not.” She put the car into park and shut off the engine. “We can’t give him the satisfaction.”

“But he’s naked.”

“So ignore it. It’s his house. He can wear what he wants.”

Panic flooded Blair’s face, and when he spoke again, it laced his voice. “But he’s naked.”

She chuckled. “Would you feel better if I took off my clothes? You’re welcome to remove yours, too.”

“Jesus, no. Are you two … Is this … Are you trying to … What are you trying to do?” His horrified look had her laughing, and a few tears streamed down her face.

She swiped at her eyes and opened her door. “Oh, thanks. I needed that.”

When he continued to huff and puff, she added, “Relax. No one will violate you. We’ll go inside, apologize profusely for intruding, and offer to make dinner. I brought all his favorite foods.” She wiggled her brows. “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, you know.”

Grumbling, Blair said, “As long as I’m not on the menu. And I have no desire to get to his heart.”

They both stepped from the car. The puppy hurled himself down the stairs and raced to greet them as Blair went to the trunk and popped it open. Laura assumed he was stalling, but that was fine with her. She approached the front porch and her naked-ass brother.

“We appreciate you letting us stay here. It would make things a bit easier if you got dressed.”

Patrick growled. “I hate clothes. And I don’t care what your pet human wants or how he feels.”

“It’s chilly out here.” She glanced pointedly at his junk.

As she knew it would, that did the trick. He snarled once more and whirled into the house. Laughing to herself—men are so easy—she joined Blair behind the car and helped him unload.
